About the activity
Born around 1040, Eudes de Châtillon became Pope Urban II on March 12, 1088.
Forerunner of the first crusade in 1096, he established the truce of God in order to limit the combativeness of the lords and obtained the exclusive privilege to crown the kings of France in the cathedral of Reims.
He died on July 29, 1099 in Rome.
In 1875, it was decided to raise a statue in his memory on the ruins of the family castle.
On July 21, 1887, the statue Urban II was inaugurated in the presence of 20,000 people.
It is 9 meters high and 25 meters with the base (the head and the tiara alone are 2.40 meters high).
